Building an International Canoe

[TODO make links to boat parts, look for ??]

What?

This is a summary of the measurements I've used to make my boat. If you're just reading these pages for interests sake you can probably skip this. If you are actually planning on building a boat, these numbers will be invaluable since otherwise you'll be left to guess at a good location for a lot of items.

Measurements from the Rules

Measurements taken from the rules are noted with a * beside the description.

Measurements that aren't in the Rules

I have found measurements that aren't in the rules through a lot of reading and emailing. These are what I've used for my boat. They aren't mandatory, just what people have found works.

Because the International Canoe is a development class there aren't very many specific measurements in the rules. Most of these numbers are a result of people experimenting over many years. Its a good starting point to work towards a boat that is specifically tuned for you.

Hull

The measurements from the hull are taken from the point of the bow or stern.

Measurements
Rudder box, aft edge to transom 465mm
Rudder box slot length 315mm
Seat Carriage Track, aft edge to transom ?
Seat Carriage Track, fore edge to transom 2585mm?
Daggerboard, fore edge to transom 2850mm
Sidestay to transom (straight line, not along centreline) 2940mm
Min Weight (all up)
Mast to bow 1960mm
Spinnaker launcher mouth to bow 1100mm
Forestay to bow 560mm
Bowsprit (extended) tip to bow * 1800mm

Mast

The measurements from the mast are all from the bottom of the hull due to the fact that the deck has no restrictions on its design and construction.

Measurements
Highest point of main sail (upper contrasting band, lower edge) * 6360mm
Highest point of spinnaker (upper contrasting band, lower edge) * 6360mm
Fore Triangle * 4730mm
Lower Spreaders 2760mm

Upper Spreader Angle ?
Upper Spreader Length ?
Diametre, fore-aft ?
Diametre, side-to-side ?
Flex, fore-aft ?
Flex, side-to-side ?
Weight ?

Spreader angles are measured from a baseline running from mast to stern.

Boom

I have a carbon boom. See ?? for a description of how it was built.

Measurements
Length
Diametre, vertical * 100mm
Diametre, horizontal 80mm
Flex, fore-aft ?
Flex, side-to-side ?
Weight 5 pounds

Seat

See ?? for a description of how it was built.

Measurements
Centreline to Outer edge of seat (measured horizontally) * 2040mm
Max. Width * 500mm
Mass (min-max) * 9kg-12kg
Actual Mass ?
Actual Width ?
Actual Length (end-to-end) ?
Rise 9 inches

The rise is a measure of how much higher the end of the seat is from the seat at the centreline of the boat due to the curvature of the seat. Its frequently 6 inches, mine is 9 inches to allow for a bit more clearance over waves, and time to react to lulls before splashing down.

Rigging

This is a list of the lengths of various parts of the running and standing rigging, useful when estimating quantities of rope and wire for purchasing. See ?? for a description and drawings of the layout.

Daggerboard

I have a wood core, carbon daggerboard. See ?? for a description of how it was built.

Measurements

Width 28mm
Chord at hull 260mm
Chord at tip 160mm
Chord starts taper, from tip 400mm
Section NACA0020/SD1020?

Rudder

I have a wood core, carbon rudder with a stainless steel post. See ?? for a description of how it was built.
